Commentary: The Angelus (Latin for "angel") is a Christian devotion in memory of the Incarnation. The name Angelus is derived from the opening words: Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ ("... the Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary ...") and is practiced by reciting as versicle and response three Biblical verses describing the mystery; alternating with the Angelic Salutation ("Hail Mary"). The devotion is traditionally recited by Roman Catholics three times daily: 6:00 am, 12 Noon, and 6:00 pm. The devotion is also used by some Anglican and Lutheran churches. In churches and monasteries, the Angelus is usually accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell, which is a call to prayer and to spread good-will to everyone on Earth. The angel referred to in the prayer is Gabriel, a messenger of God who revealed to Mary that she would conceive a child to be born the Son of God. (Cf. Lk. 1:26-38).
The Regina Caeli or Regina Coeli ("Queen of Heaven"), an ancient Latin Marian Hymn of the Church, is one of the four seasonal Marian antiphons of the Blessed Virgin Mary, prescribed to be sung or recited in the Liturgy of the Hours at the conclusion of the last of the hours to be prayed in common that day, typically night prayer (Compline or Vespers). The Regina Caeli is sung or recited in place of the Angelus during the Easter season, from Holy Saturday through Pentecost Sunday.
