YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MONK TO LIVE LIKE ONE BEARDS TEE“You greatly delude yourself and err, if you think that one thing is demanded from the layman and another from the monk. The Holy Scriptures do not know any distinctions. They enjoin that all lead the life of monks.” (St. John Chrysostom) “The monastic state, taken in what is essential, does not constitute a particular form of existence on the borders or at the side of Christianity; it is the same Christianity offered to all.” (Abbot Columba Marmion OSB) In other words, you don't have to be a monk to live like one. Growing a beard is good first step.Price: $16.00

THE JERUSALEM CROSS TEEThe Jerusalem cross, also known as the Crusaders' cross or among Catholic youth as the "Search Cross", is a Christian symbol consisting of a large Greek cross surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. This simpler form of the cross was on the papal banner given to the Crusaders by Pope Urban II for the First Crusade, and was a symbol of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The four smaller crosses are said to symbolize either the four books of the Gospel or the four directions in which the Word of Christ spread from Jerusalem. Alternately, all five crosses can symbolize the five wounds of Christ during the Passion.Price: $16.00

G.K. CHESTERTON: PINT, PIPE, & CROSS TEEG.K. Chesterton said, “In Catholicism, the pint, the pipe and the Cross can all fit together.” Indeed, they can, and they must. For it is equally the heretic and the heathen who falsely consider all drinking is drunkenness and all smoking is vice, but it is the Catholic - whether he is a formal member of the Catholic Church or not - who accepts the pint, the pipe, and the Cross. For though neither of them are good for the body but each, in their proper place, are good for the soul.Price: $16.00

JESUS NOT-MADE-BY-HANDS BUTTONThe Icon of the Savior, image "Not-Made-By-Hands" is one of the earliest icons witnessed to by the Church. Acheiropoieta, literally "not-handmade", or Icons Not Made by Hand (and variants), are a particular kind of icon, ones that are alleged to have come into existence miraculously, not by a human painter. Invariably these are images of Jesus or the Virgin. The most notable examples are, in the Eastern church the Image of Edessa or Mandylion, and in the West, the Veil of Veronica, the Shroud of Turin and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

JESUS CHRIST PANTOCRATOR (SINAI) BUTTONThe iconic image of Christ Pantocrator ("Christ, Ruler of All") was one of the first images of Christ developed in the early Church and remains a central icon of Eastern Christians. In the half-length image, Christ holds the New Testament in his left hand and makes the gesture of teaching or of blessing with his right. The oldest known surviving example of the icon of Christ Pantocrator was painted in encaustic on panel in the sixth or seventh century, and survived the period of destruction of images during the Iconoclastic disputes that racked the Eastern church, 726 to 787 and 814 to 842, by being preserved in the remote desert of the Sinai, in Saint Catherine's Monastery.Price: $.60
-
PANAGIA OF THE PASSION (SINAI) BUTTONThis 1579 A.D. icon is of the “Panagia” (the Greek term for “All-Pure”) Virgin Mary for she was truly all pure and ever Virgin, for the catholic Church has taught in every generation of its history (from the Day of Pentecost) that Mary the Mother of God was pure from sin by her choice over her entire life. Icons of the Passion refer to the revelation to Christ of His coming Passion (rejection, beating, Crucifixion, and Death) at the end of His life, and here He looks up to see two angels showing Him the instruments of His Crucifixion. He holds the Virgin’s hand tightly, and his sandal falls off as His very real humanity recoils.Price: $.60

SACRED HEART OF JESUS BUTTONLord Jesus, let my heart never rest until it finds You, who are its center, its love, and its happiness. By the wound in Your heart pardon the sins that I have committed whether out of malice or out of evil desires. JESUS DIVINE MERCY BUTTONIn the 1930's, Sister Maria Faustina received a message of mercy from Our Lord that she was told to spread throughout the world, a message of God's mercy to each person individually, and for humanity as a whole. Jesus asked that a picture be painted of him with the inscription: "Jesus, I Trust in You." She was asked to be a model of mercy to others, to live her entire life, in imitation of Christ's, as a sacrifice. She commissioned this painting in 1935, showing a red and a white light shining from Christ's Sacred Heart.Price: $.60

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE BUTTONIn 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble Native Mexican named Juan Diego at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth. She wished to be called "Guadalupe", which means "the one who crushes the serpent." She left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the Juan Diego's tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay nearly 500 years later and still defies all scientific explanations of its origin. Our Lady of Guadalupe is patroness of the Americas, the Pro-Life Movement, and is called the Star of the New Evangelization. Her feast day is 12 December.Price: $.60

CIMABUE SANTA CROCE CRUCIFIX BUTTONThis is one of Cimabue's early works, he painted it around 1265, before his journey to Rome in 1272. Cimabue, whose real name was Cenni di Pepo, was Giotto's master and was mainly famous for a later masterpiece: the crucifix in Santa Croce in Florence. But after the flood in 1966 in Florence, which partly destroyed the crucifix, this work has become more important. Here he brilliantly breaks away from the Byzantine style, not only in technique, but also in his more “humane” vision of the tragedy of Calvary: instead of a triumphant Christ, he paints a suffering Christ who carries the weight of the sin of man. He is, in fact, laying the basis for Giotto's great innnovations and announcing the Italian Renaissance style.Price: $.60

THE JERUSALEM CROSS BUTTONThe Jerusalem cross, also known as the Crusaders' cross or among Catholic youth as the "Search Cross", is a Christian symbol consisting of a large Greek cross surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. Alternately, all five crosses can symbolize the five wounds of Christ during the Passion.Price: $.60

ST BENEDICT & THE HOLY RULE BUTTONGirded with a faith, and the performance of good works, let us follow in Christ's path by the guidance of the Gospel; then we shall deserve to see him "who has called us into his kingdom." If we wish to attain a dwelling place in his kingdom, we shall not reach it unless we hasten there by our good deeds. Just as there exists an evil fervor, a bitter spirit, which divides us from God and leads us to hell, so there is a good fervor which sets us apart from evil inclinations and leads us toward God and eternal life. No one should follow what he considers to be good for himself, but rather what seems good for another. Let them put Christ before all else; and may he lead us all to everlasting life. -- from the Rule of Saint BenedictPrice: $.60

INTO GREAT SILENCE [DVD]In this contemplative documentary from filmmaker Philip Groning, the Grande Chartreuse monastery opens its doors to the public for the first time since being founded by St. Bruno in 1084 to offer an intimate look at a lifestyle rarely experienced by those outside of the brotherhood. This transcendent film is one of the most mesmerizing and poetic chronicles of spirituality ever created. It is more meditation than documentary - it is a rare transformative experience for all. Located in the remote regions of the French Alps, near the Dauphine Alps, the Grande Chartreuse is the top monastery of the Carthusian order. In this documentary, the lives of the pious monks of Grande Chartreuse are captured on film as director Groening adapts to their ascetic lifestyle for six months and captures their daily life without the intrusion of voice-over, musical score, interviews, or archival footage.Price: $30.00

FROM THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN (REFLECTIONS ON ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN MONASTICISM) [DVD]From the Little Mountain DVD takes you through a year at the Hermitage of the Holy Cross in West Virginia. This video is an attempt to portray some of the beauty and struggle of monastic life using quotes from the Scriptures and the Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church. It is being used in at least one Catholic monastery we know of as a teaching tool for the new (and old) monks. Insights about monasticism from one of the senior monks at the monastery are given as you are visually taken through the Church liturgical year and the changing seasons in the mountains. This is a unique documentary of an Orthodox monastery in the 21st century, but the imagery and principles set forth are as ancient (and relevant) as those written by the 6th century instructor of monks, Abba Dorotheos. We cannot recommend this documentary enough! 32 Minutes.Price: $20.00

"By studying the history of monasticism and its great heroes we come to realize that, for the Christian, much of what we call `monastic' is purely and simply what being a follower of Christ is all about, and that being a monk, whether inside monastic enclosures or outside `in the world,' is simply becoming the sort of person everyone ought to be, a person who unites action and contemplation in the care of souls."Price: $24.00

He describes the “arid and dark night of contemplation” which leads us to “the knowledge of oneself and of one’s misery.” True knowledge of our self and of our condition shows how far we must go to find God, who our restless hearts incessantly seek. The Dark Night of the Soul describes how first the senses, and then the spirit undergo a series of purgation, which aids in bringing it closer to God, and eventually preparing it for union with Him. The individual soul seeks Jesus in a mystical marriage. For after the dark night, comes the joy of mystical union with God.Price: $13.00

THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINEThey that seek shall find him, and those who find shall praise him. The first autobiography ever written, Augustine's Confessions ranks among the most profound books in history. St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was a one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. After a series of personal crises, and years of serious study and debate, he converted to Christianity and eventually became the Bishop of Hippo, in northern Africa. THE SCREWTAPE LETTERSWormwood, a demon apprentice, must secure the damnation of a young man who's just become a Christian. He seeks the advice of an experienced devil, his uncle Screwtape. Their correspondence offers invaluable - and often humorous - insights on temptation, pride, and the ultimate victory of faith over evil forces. Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons."Price: $15.00

PRAYERS OF A YOUNG POETThis volume marks the first translation of these prayer-poems into English. Originally written in 1899, Rilke wrote them upon returning to Germany from his first trip to Russia. His experience of the East shaped him profoundly. He found himself entranced by Orthodox churches and monasteries, above all by the icons that seemed to him like flames glowing in dark spaces. He intended these poems as icons of sorts, gestures that could illumine a way for seekers in the darkness. As Rilke here writes, "I love the dark hours of my being, / for they deepen my senses." 112 Pages. Hardcover.Price: $23.00

LEISURE (THE BASIS OF CULTURE)Leisure is an attitude of the mind and a condition of the soul that fosters a capacity to perceive the reality of the world. Author Josef Pieper shows that the Greeks and medieval Europeans, understood the great value and importance of leisure. He also points out that religion can be born only in leisure — a leisure that allows time for the contemplation of the nature of God. Leisure has been, and always will be, the first foundation of any culture. Pieper maintains that our bourgeois world of total labor has vanquished leisure, and issues a startling warning: Unless we regain the art of silence and insight, the ability for non-activity, unless we substitute true leisure for our hectic amusements, we will destroy our culture — and ourselves.Price: $12.00
